Newsgroups Help

In addition to being the tool for managing your e-mail, Outlook Express manages newsgroups. With Outlook Express, you can subscribe to newsgroups from the news.mountaincable.net news server, as well as read and post newsgroup messages.

To set up your news settings
1. Start Outlook Express.
2. Click the Tools menu, then click Accounts.
3. Click the Add button, then click News.
4. Type your name as you want it to appear in your messages, then click Next.
5. Type your e-mail address, then click Next.
6. Type news.mountaincable.net, then click Next.
7. Click Close.

The Accounts Window

The fist time you run Outlook Express, you will be asked if you want to download the entire list of newsgroups from the server. You will need this list in order to know what newsgroups you can subscribe to.

To access the news.mountaincable.net server with Outlook Express
1. Launch Outlook Express. If Microsoft Internet Explorer is open, you can access your mail by clicking the Mail button on the Internet Explorer toolbar, then selecting Read News in the pop-up menu. Otherwise, launch Outlook Express from the start menu.
2. Click the news.mountaincable.net folder (or one of the newsgroups within it) in the folder list in the left-hand pane of the Outlook Express window.

The Outlook Express news window

The Shaw Cable (previously Mountain Cable) news server is represented by a folder in the folder list (just like your Inbox e-mail folder). If you click the + sign next to the news.mountaincable.net folder, you will see the names of the newsgroups you are currently subscribed to. However, when you first set up the news server within Outlook Express, you are not subscribed to any newsgroups.

Subscribing to a newsgroup
The fist step toward subscribing to a newsgroup involves finding the name of the newsgroup you want to subscribe to. If you already know the name of the desired newsgroup, you're one step ahead. If you don't know the name of the newsgroup you want, you can search for one (or for as many as you want).

To find and subscribe to a newsgroup
1. In the Outlook Express Tools menu, click Newsgroups...
2. Enter a keyword in the Display newsgroups which contain: text box, or leave it empty and browse through the entire list of newsgroups.
3. Single-click the name of the newsgroup you want to subscribe to, then click the Subscribe button.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to subscribe to more than one newsgroup.
5. Click OK. The newsgroup(s) you just subscribed to will appear inside your news.mountaincable.net folder.

The subscription window

To Unsubscribe from a newsgroup
Right-click the name of the newsgroup in the news.mountaincable.net folder, then click Unsubscribe.

To Read messages in a newsgroup
1. In the Tools menu, select Newsgroups... The Newsgroup Subscriptions window will open.
2. If there is more than one news server in the Accounts area at left, single-click the desired server.
3. In the scrolling list in the centre of the Outlook Express window, click on the desired newsgroup (groups appear in alphabetical order).
4. To read messages without subscribing to the group, click Go to. Otherwise, click Subscribe. It may take a while to download the list of messages in the chosen newsgroup. Available messages will be listed in the message list pane at the top right of the Outlook Express window.
5. To display the contents of a message, click it. The contents of the message will be displayed in the bottom right pane of the Outlook Express window. Double-click a message to make it appear in its own window.

To reply to messages in a newsgroup
1. In the message list, click the message you want to reply to.
2. Click the Reply Group> button on the toolbar.
3. Compose your message.
4. Click Send to post it.
5. Within a few minutes, your message will appear in the discussion thread.

To post (send) a message to a newsgroup
1. Select the desired newsgroup from the news.mountaincable.net folder.
2. Click the New Post button  on the Outlook Express news toolbar.
3. In the New Message window, enter a subject for your message in the Subject: box. This is what others will see in the message list pane when they open this newsgroup.
4. Press the Tab key on your keyboard, or click with your mouse in the body of the New Message window, then compose your message.
5. To send your message immediately, click the Post button on the New Message toolbar.

To delay sending your message until the next time you send and receive messages, click File, then click Send Later. If you only want to save your message, click File, then click Save. It will be saved to the Drafts folder showing in the pane at left. (see below)

NOTE: Your e-mail address is automatically attached to any message you post to a newsgroup.
